Former Group President, Direct, Progressive Insurance
Alan Bauer was Group President of Progressive Insurance’s direct business from 2001 to 2006. Alan first joined Progressive as a summer intern in 1979. During Alan’s 5+ year head of Progressive’s direct business, premium grew by more than 20% per annum to over USD 4 billion, at a very attractive Combined Ratio.
Under Alan’s leadership, Progressive was the first auto insurer in the world to sell insurance online, as well as being a pioneer in offering customers tools to make policy changes, report claims, etc. He is the lead inventor on a number of company patents that focus on online insurance and usage-based insurance. Alan was an early adopter of a number of technologies including web analytics and SEO, as well as pricing tools such as CHAID and optimization. Some other notable innovations introduced by Progressive as a result of Alan’s work range from the use of personal credit history in auto insurance ratemaking to the “ticker”-style presentation of Progressive’s rates for individual risks along with those from other companies.
Alan was recently named one of Insurance & Technology’s “Top 10 Innovators of the Decade” and was earlier featured as one of Fast Company’s “Fast 50.”
He and his wife and his Weimaraner live in Northern California.
Chief Executive Officer, Liberty Direct, Poland
Michal Kwiecinski is CEO of Liberty Direct, a greenfield startup operation in Poland and part of Boston-based Liberty Mutual Group. Michal joined Liberty Mutual to lead the business building project and Polish market launch in 2007. He has been managing the operation ever since.
Michal joined Liberty from the Polish office of McKinsey & Company, where he spent seven years as a management consultant working with clients in Poland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Russia, South Africa, and Israel. Michal holds a PhD in mathematics from the University of Marseilles in France. Prior to his consulting and business career, Michal worked for five years as a research mathematician and academic teacher at universities in France, Japan, and Poland.
Former Chief Executive Officer, AXA
Peter Hubbard has a long and distinguished career in the insurance and financial services sectors. Peter is the executive chairman of UK General Insurance, a specialty insurance provider, and a non exec Director of Keoghs, a leading provider of legal services to the insurance sector. He also serves as a Director of both the Chartered Insurance Institute and the Financial Skills Partnership. From 2001 to 2008, Peter was the Chief Executive Officer of AXA Insurance, the 4th largest general insurance company and the 2nd largest commercial insurance broker in the UK. Prior to AXA, he has held a number of positions at Lloyds TSB. He is a Chartered Accountant by profession.
Chief Executive Officer, Travelex
Peter Jackson joined Travelex as Chief Executive Officer in March 2010 and is a member of the Group Board and chair of the Executive Committee. Before Travelex, Peter was Managing Director of Consumer Banking for the Lloyds Banking Group, having previously held a number of senior roles within the Retail arm of HBOS plc before its merger with Lloyds.
After studying at Cambridge University, where he gained a 1st Class Honours degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Peter started his career at McKinsey & Company.
Director of Personal Lines Pricing and Underwriting, Zurich Insurance Group
Darren McCauley joined Zurich Insurance Group in 2010. As Director of Personal Lines Pricing, oversees three teams of underwriters and actuaries. Darren started his career as an underwriting trainee with London & Edinburgh in the 1990’s. From there, he joined RBS as underwriting manager for Direct Line and then assumed the position of motor business manager for Churchill. Darren’s next position was with BGL (formerly Budget), where he oversaw the establishment of the pricing department, recruiting a team of 20.
When not at work, Darren has his hands full with twin three year daughters and a baby boy while enjoying life back down South with the Downs and the coast close by.
Rudi Van Delm
Director of Pricing & Underwriting, Direct Line Group
Rudi Van Delm, FIA, is Director of Pricing & Underwriting for Personal Lines at Direct Line Group. Rudi joined the group from Lloyds Banking Group, where, as Chief Actuary, he was responsible for pricing, underwriting, reserving, capital, and reinsurance. Prior to this role, Rudi was a director at the UK office of Ernst & Young.
Rudi has lived in Belgium, Germany, US and UK, and has worked with clients in over 15 countries. He has consulted clients on many aspects of insurance, including pricing, capital, reserving, and customer management.
Partner, McKinsey & Company’s
Nick Hoffman joined McKinsey & Company’s London office in 2001, where he is now a leader of McKinsey’s insurance work in the U.K. Nick is a co-leader of McKinsey’s initiative on the future of P&C industry performance, building on the Firm’s research on the US P&C ‘Journey’ spanning the past few decades. His recent work has covered strategic issues, pricing improvement initiatives, and lean operational improvement in personal lines.
Nick was a Business Analyst in McKinsey’s New York office from 1994-1996. While on a leave of absence from McKinsey in 1997-1999, Nick worked as Special Assistant to the Director of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. He is currently a member of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Investment Committee.
Chief Executive Officer, Earnix
David Schapiro has more than 20 years of marketing, technology and business experience in senior management positions. He has helped define the marketing, product, and overall business strategy for venture capital funds and leading startup companies. Prior to Earnix, David served as Executive Vice President of Markets and Products at ClickSoftware (NASDAQ: CKSW), where he was a key factor in driving the company from its founding, through its IPO and finally to leading provider of service optimization solutions. Earlier in his career, David held management and development positions at Applied Materials, Scitex, and Control Data Corporation.
Reuven Shnaps, PhD
Vice President of Professional Services, Earnix
Reuven Shnaps is responsible for the management and delivery of advanced analytics and consulting projects performed by Earnix for our customers around the world. Dr. Shnaps has spent more than 15 years developing and analyzing advanced statistical and economic models. He has extensive experience in managing and implementing price optimization projects in leading insurance companies and banks in both Europe and North America. Prior to joining Earnix, Reuven worked in the economic and statistical consulting group at Deloitte & Touche in the United States, serving corporate clients across multiple industries. He holds a PhD and a master of arts in economics from The University of Pennsylvania as well as a master of arts in business economics and a bachelor of arts in economics and statistics from Bar Ilan University.
Chief Executive Officer, AXA Global Direct
Stephane Guinet is the CEO of AXA Global Direct (AGD), AXA Group business unit in charge of all direct P&C businesses worldwide. AGD operates with different brands in 9 countries with a GWP of around 1,7 b€ and over 4 million customers in Europe and Asia. In most markets where it operates, AGD units hold the #1 or #2 position in the direct segment. Stephane is also a member of AXA Group P&C Board and other Group bodies. Prior to heading AGD, Stephane was COO of AXA MedLA Region, the Business Unit covering all traditional businesses from the Middle East to South America. Before joining AXA in 2006, Stephane was an entrepreneur who founded and headed Assurland.com, the leading French Insurance Aggregator. He was also the founder and CEO of Prima Solutions, an Insurance Software business that was eventually sold to Ilog (now part of IBM). Stephane has also served previously as a Consultant with McKinsey & Co. He is 44, married with 3 children, and holds a bachelor in Science from Ecole Polytechnique (France).
Group Pricing Director, BGL Group, UK
Martyn Green is a UK qualified actuary that has worked at all levels of the insurance industry from a junior analyst to an executive board member. Martyn’s work has included a substantial amount of innovative pricing development as well as reserving, capital modelling, reinsurance purchase, investment strategy, contract negotiation, planning, and research & development. At Lloyds TSB, Martyn led a program that introduced innovative algorithms that resulted in more accurate risk models and substantial monetary benefits. As a Pricing Manager at Prospero Direct (which became AXA Direct), Martyn was responsible for all analysis and pricing for the business. Using innovative approaches to combine risk analysis with newly developed price optimisation, Martyn helped the company grow from 10,000 policies to over 300,000 profitable policies in a highly competitive market. Martyin is a fellow of the Institute Actuaries and graduate of Lincoln College in Oxford.
Head of Pricing Development, RSA
Colin started his career applying his mathematics background pricing foreign exchange and interest rate derivatives in the city. This led to roles as a proprietary trader for two investments banks, exploiting arbitrage in derivative pricing and long term trading based on macroeconomic trends.
After several years backpacking around the world, Colin began his far more ethical career in insurance pricing.
He has worked for RSA UK since 2005, managing household and motor portfolios. He has a track record of introducing sophistication and new techniques in volume lines pricing, and has implemented technical pricing approaches in some of RSA’s overseas motor portfolios during periods working outside the UK.
Outside of work Colin founded a charity helping families after deaths overseas, and changed government policy in a number of areas.
Colin has a Mathematics MA from Cambridge and an Economics MSc from Birkbeck College. He lives in Sussex with his partner and 2 year old son.
Vice President of Products and Business Development
Mr. Melnik is responsible for Earnix’s solution road-map and business development strategy. He joined Earnix from the London office of McKinsey & Co. During his five years at McKinsey, Mr. Melnik served leading financial institutions in Europe and the United States on a broad array of strategic and operational concerns. He consulted for insurance companies in areas related to pricing and underwriting as well as channel management and marketing. Prior to joining McKinsey, Mr. Melnik implemented enterprise software at Comverse Technologies Ltd and Elscint Ltd (medical devices). He holds an MBA degree from the Wharton Business School of The University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor of science in industrial engineering from the Technological Institute of Israel (Technion).
